Roughly fifty cars have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with swastikas, they stated in a official communication.
Law enforcement report they were contacted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a swastika, they stated.
Law enforcement then discovered many other vandalized cars and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police say preliminary tests suggest the fluid was most likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; authorities are not yet informed of any physical harm in association with the event," they stated.
City officials said they were trying "to resolve the case" and have appealed to the community for details.
A senior representative stated the attack rendered him without words and had to be addressed promptly.
"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on a platform, referring to the killing of nine people by a shooter targeting individuals of immigrant origin in 2020.
